Tool AAA host. Maybe?

I gutted my Tool AAA flashlight and was pleased to find that the end is about 12.2mm with a lip at the end to hold a module in, and still alow the lens to poke though. I stuck an x-drive in for a test fit / example since its my only driver not in use right now. Too bad its just slightly too small all together.

I might try and find some 10280 batteries since they are shorter (and also very hard to find in small quantities). Has anyone else tried using one of these?
They come in titanium, copper, brass, and aluminum too.

Driver can sit in-between battery tube and end.

10440 slightly too long

Maybe some day...

Howdy all. Just joined and look forward to learning a bunch from the members here. I have been interested in lasers since I saw my first pointer back in 1996. Bought one then and it was fun, but not like what is on the market today. One of the main reasons I joined today is I finally bought what I would consider a higher powered laser, as in it will light fires and melt things. The seller at the gun show claims it is 2000mW but the packaging does not say so (obviously from China). So I have no clue what it really is but I am researching if I need to wear safety glasses with this one. I own several other lasers, most green, but none that produce any heat (probably all 5mW pointers).

Aside from lasers I am a gadget nut. Love flashlights, knives, multitools, and assorted EDC items. Avid off-roader and Jeep owner, gun enthusiast, photographer and wanna-be storm chaser (except we rarely get storms here). I can fix almost anything mechanical and will help you fix yours.

Recently divorced so now I can actually spend money on decent lasers rather than the cheap ones I have had.

hey all

G'day all, just thought id say hi from SA Australia new to the forum, stumbled across this forum while doing some research on laser pointers so thought id join as it seems very informative, haven't had much to do with laser pointers except some of the shockingly bad ones available on ebay, thought id step it up and buy a descend one, after having a look on these forums ive decided to order a striker series 470nm (bright blue) 5w with G7 lens and x3 beam expander from Sanwu as soon as Podo reply's to my PM lol, anyway thanks and look forward to leaning some useful info on lasers, cheers

Red dimmed light coming out of green laser

Hi everyone. I bought a 303 laser pointer and it worked fine at the beginning. When I tested it out a couple of minutes later it only showed a very light and small green dot. I didn't know what it was so I left it and tried again later. Then later there was only a really small dimmed red light coming out. What can I do and is my laser pointer already broken??!!! Please help.:cryyy:

488nm Sanwu pocket review

Hi everyone,

Heres a little review of the recent addition to Sanwu's products. The 488nm pocket.

Order: Sanwu 488nm Pocket with G7 lens (nm measured)

Ordered 3/4, Arrived 23/4. 20 days, a few of those spent in customs :D
Paid: $85usd, $10 for the G7 lens and $5 for postage. $100usd total

Quality: Amazing machining on the S/S host, sections screw together firmly and are seamless. Press "fire" button is great, feels solid and has a loud click.

Diode: Uses the new Sharp GH04850B2G diode, and has SB308B292 printed around the diodes window.

Color: No hint of green in the color at all, id say its definately 488nm, baby sky blue.

Output: Raw output matches closely with Sharps other recent releases, i would say a "rough" output profile, with the typical box artifacts going on, bright outside ring lines. Not smooth and round like the PLT5-488 diode. Also the focused output through the 3E lens appeares to be slightly tilted. Maybe to reduce risk of back reflection? only noticeable when you defocus the output, it turns from a round dot to slightly oval shape.

Power: 60.8mW. My laser came with a 3 element lens fitted, and the G7 in a plastic bag. Im having trouble removing the 3 element, so until i figure out how without scratching it, i only have the LPM measurement with the 3E. Still cool to the touch with a 30sec on test

Critic: The threading in this host was quite dirty, i gave it a wipe over. The lens knob at the front of the housing wobbles abit when its slightly unscrewed.

Im using a Efest IMR10440 3.7v 350mah battery. It fits no problem.

And a few pictures

Thanks Sanwu for a great product, and a pleasent purchase! :D

405nm safety questions

$

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum and came here to learn.

I've recently made a laser gimbal device that "draws" with a 405nm 5mw laser pointer I bought on ebay.
Ebay Listing

Here's a video of my application
YouTube Video

So my questions are:

1) Do you think I need to be wearing safety glasses while my robots draws?

2) Is there anything I can do to make it so the user doesn't need glasses? Such as adding a filter or decreasing power?

3) If it is dangerous can I lower the input voltage to get the output power into a safer range?

4) Is there any other ways to "write" on a surface with a laser that would be safer?

It say class 2 laser on the sticker but I'm guessing its probably not...

Small but strong laser pointer?

Hey guys, I golf as a hobby and I thought of a great idea to help myself and other golfers, using a laser pointer under the bill of a baseball cap to monitor our head movement during the stroke.

However, I have looked online for golf training aids like that but all of them use weak red laser pointers that can only be seen indoors. So guys, are there any strong laser pointers that can definitely be seen outdoors and is automatic (meaning just press the button once and it'll beam forever until the button is pressed again or battery dies) but also small enough to be taped to the underside of a baseball cap bill and be worn comfortably?

It lives!!
I had a 5.5 watt that had died last year so I had Sanwu make a module that was 7 watt for it
I sent the host back to them. He repolished it up for me while it was there. In the meantime I got the expander for it as well. Of course I just had to fire it

Real amateur datalogging

Hi there,

Say I happen to skimp on cost and neglect EagleEye computer interface versions of Jerrys loggers (is that a bad decision by itself?)

Could I do up my own data log by filming the display over time and doing up an excel sheet for the ultimate cheapo W/cm2 graph?

Of course this would only be for myself but would it pass as being a legitimate thing? As manual as it is?

Your inputs on those two questions would be helpful for poor me, thanks.

Cheap way to measure laser wavelength

$

Not long ago I came across an interesting youtube video about measuring wavelengths of lasers, its fairly recent and I haven't seen a post about it here, so I'm guessing most people don't know about the video or the method the youtuber proposes in it.

Here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9WS7Jo2TAY

I thought it was very cool so I decided to buy a diffraction grating and try it my self, I don't have a big ruler so I used measuring tape :D its harder with it but that's all I had.

So far I tried this with just two lasers and with at least 10 attempts.
First my LaserBTB pen, it has an amazing perfect symmetrical round dot which made it easier for measuring, multiple attempts had me at 528nm - 530nm until I got the setup as perfectly aligned as possible and here are the final results:

Pretty close to the advertised wavelength, I am happy with that number.
Next I tried Sanwu pocket 505nm:

Also very close.

Pics of my setup:

Conclusion: My final results were pretty close to the advertised wavelengths, but I do not wish to state that that's what the actual wavelengths of these lasers are, my setup was not perfect, and I used a closet door instead of a solid wall. (I had my reasons :D) Maybe if you get a laser and you have no idea what wavelength it is, this is one way to measure it. Nevertheless it was fun and I thought it was important enough to share.

Rofin DPSS YAG metal cutting laser teardown

I bought an unknown (used) laser head from local site. No info no datasheet, it turned out to be a high power diode pumped YAG laser. Look what I've found inside:

Large YAG rod in flowtube, appears to be in perfect shape

Diode compartments

Opened one

I'll have problems with testing these diodes because my power supply only supplies 3,5A - they just glow at this current, nothing more. Facets look fine tho, much better than ones on ebay listed as "Tested to be withing blablabla W". Maybe I'll finally have some decent pumps for dpss lasers. Nice

Btw, since I am quite a hypochondriac I need a little advice - when I opened this laser there was some coolant left inside, it wasn't water because it had quite strong off-sweet smell - any chance it could be something toxic/nasty or I shouldnt worry? Ofc I wasn't drinking it but I'm still concerned

Just finished building a nubm44 build and while swapping a g2 for a 3 element once! something must have gotten on the window and burned now there is a large distortion when unfocused and I am probably losing a lot of power. Will this damage the diode further over time?

Okay so I got the Pocket in the mail yesterday and I was almost in shock mostly because I’ve never in my life seen this wavelength. This thing is absolutely beautiful! Podo does such fantastic work.

Order date was 4-4-18
Ship date was 4-16-18
Arrived date 4-25-18
9 days to arrive from ship date. That’s really quick!

This isn’t a review since a lot of detail was left out, this was simply a thread on yet another very happy Sanwu customer :)
I haven’t gotten a chance to meter it but I’m sure it’s right where it needs to be. It’s so hard to believe that this wavelength just 2 years ago was over $1500 for the Diode alone. Sharp has really been puting some incredible products out lately and who knows, maybe sometime in the near future we’ll see a “Sharp” brand 30-50mw DD 589nm  we can sure dream.

When I get some more time I’ll post a bit more, this is all I have time for. Thanks for looking everyone.

Special thanks to Podo :)

Hello from Tennesse

Hi all
I am a father of four, teacher and amatuer astronomer. I am just barely getting started with the night sky. I had bought a cheap laser (not knowing anything about lasers) and switched it over to another host for my telescope. I didn't do the best job and i realized i needed a better and brighter laser with a constant on/off switch. So this lead me to hours of searching the internet and ultimately this forum to find the best fit. I am still searching for the best 100mw green laser under $60. Seems like everything else quality with constant on off is $100 or better. I definitely appeciate the wealth of info that is here. I did read the beginner stickies and hope if i do inadvertantly get off track someone will kindly help me. Glad to be here.☺
