lens stuck in laser.. help..

hey, i got a laser online, it has an adjustment piece which is basically a big lens holder,

http://s7.postimg.org/wgb1j3gij/laser2.jpg

this piece is what i mean.
and inside that piece their is a lens like this

http://s16.postimg.org/nfkfmgfat/lens.jpg

except its an acrylic lens with a brass lens housing, inside the larger lens holder(housing). which the laser burnt.. and now it keeps burning itself because it has a black burn mark.. and i know the lens is removable, but its stuck.. what kind of screw driver should i be using to remove it and how can i get it out. and if i cant get the lens out where would i get a lens holder? i messaged a few ebay sellers with the laser asking where i can get the lens holder just a little while ago.

Theoretically, how powerful could this laser be?

Assuming this is a laser, how powerful would it have to be to piece clouds?
Other than a laser, what could it be?

Please do not ask me anything else about this image. Other than this is in a restricted military area and there was a smell of ozone and a strange burning around the area.

Hi there, been reading and finding many testimonials having mixed experiences on commercial laser engraving products (laser modules I mean), after a bit of research it seems like a quality problem, some are happy, some are not: because some lasers just died without any reason (no heatsink problem, no driver problem, etc). I'm looking for a new replacement, for my custom made CNC engraver.

So this is that time when more than technical help, a brand or quality testimonial is needed. Yes my commercial violet laser died despite all the correct and appropriate cautions after a few sessions of 30 seconds each one. There it is, I will appreciate testimonials on what has lasted for you.
Tech research on amazon testimonials is taking too long despite most of them not being quite specific.

Thanks in advance.
. . . .
Need background? here it is, been working with lasers and engraving, built my own laser CNC engraving, and several of my laser burners with their own power driver, etc, so at this point perhaps I'm not a newbie. But I'm about to buy one, preferably violet laser 500mw+ for burning. Yes I know about specs, I just would like and welcome any feedback on reliability and quality/price. Yes I HAD a violet laser engraving amazingly well but the thing died, the manufacturer grant me a full refund.

I want to avoid spending money and waiting for products to arrive so then I run on chances to see how it works (I don't live on the USA so product delivery takes time). Sure, looking for reliability, no thanks, products of
US$ 2,000+ are not on my interest.

How's it going ! :)

I'd like to introduce myself today!

My name is Dalton but I prefer to just be called boss online for short, ever since I was a child lasers played a role into my life, being obsessed with these things was something I was into. I remember where I bought them and how god awful my first lasers were, as I was young and quite frankly stupid I got paid about $80 and thought I'd invest in the best lasers I could find. I found a website called "www.tmart.com" I believe their closed now but what I wanted was a burning laser and a cool laser, so I ordered a "50mw" green pen, and a 10000mw blue-violet focus able pointer, and well I was disappointed and found a new hobby. Fast forward about a couple years and being much more mature, and lurking here on the forums for a while, I have slowly been coming back into the scene, I have been trying to study how to build my own laser, scared to and scared of bad hosts Idk why just a big pet peeve of mine.

Things you might or might not like about me:
If I think a host is ugly, it is ugly and there is no chance however cool and powerful it is. JUST A HUUUGE PET PEEVE
Currently planning on studying computer forensics and network security at an undisclosed trade school a dream job of mine.

So I just wanted to say hello to all you lovely people after lurking for a year or two, and hope maybe someone can help me out and help me build my own laser someday !!!

Have a good day ! :)

One of the reggae bands I listen to just released another single after 1 year, so pretty excited to get it on my iPhone!

Not sure if anyone listens to them or reggae in general but here is a preview(single comes out this Friday the 12th of 2016) :yh:

Stay cool, and listen to reggae

Eitan made me an amazing deal. Bought the 1.5W laser 445nm Blue and he upgraded it to the 2W+ for free! Been a while since I got a 2W laser, mine broke last year. Had a few cheap aliexpress ones but nothing serious.

Got my glasses ready, I just need someone to link be to a reputable eBay seller who sells genuine high powered 16340s.

I wanted to get the 7W but I think I'll wait. Have something a lot more stable come out that hopefully has lower divergence, then we'll see. :eg:

Customers can now specify their driver current with our SL-DPM3L & SL-DPM3H adjustable current driver and pill modules. Different current settings have been previously requested a number of times for these modules and I have had to work around the process until now, but the stores have been updated to make things a bit smoother and more straightforward.

Two current ranges are available, 400mA - 1.1A and 1.7A - 2.4A. The drop-down menu on each product page offers a number of specific options as well as a customer-specified request within each range.

US customer store:

DIY 400mA - 1.1A Driver & Pill Module

DIY 1.7A - 2.4A Driver & Pill Module

International customer store:

DIY 400mA - 1.1A Driver & Pill Module

DIY 1.7A - 2.4A Driver & Pill Module

These buck-style driver modules are designed for use with two Li-ion cells, although they will also work with one cell when powering low voltage red and IR diodes.

For those customers with a test load setup, the driver current output can be easily adjusted by the user within each specified range.

These driver and pill modules fit all C6 and Survival Laser S4, stainless steel and S4X hosts.

"KISS" guide to building a laser

The point of this thread which will be a work in progress is to help anyone to build a laser keeping things as simple as possible. It's come to my attention over the few years that I have been here and all the never ending questions like "I want to build a laser with this diode so which driver do I use and how do I wire it?" that we need a guide that isn't spread out all over the place. There's tons of great information here about specific things such as how a driver works but reality is you don't need to know how to build one yourself to pick out the parts and put them together properly. I know from asking the questions myself that many of us that have been around for years still rely on someone else either telling us what driver to buy, purchasing the driver with the diode or searching around to see what others have done.
So, what I'm looking to do here is keep things as simple as possible but also add links at the bottom to threads that cover things like how a driver works so anyone can learn more about those things if they want too.
What I NEED though is as much help as I can get to make this a success and hopefully turn it into something sticky worthy. I have put together some information so far and in particular Grainde has been a great help and if it is possible somehow to RE him, please give him props.
Help means corrections, additions, making the format great etc... I find it hard to believe that this wouldn't be a great help for so many present and future members. I have lots of experience spending hours with the search function trying to get the information that I need on my own and I'm sure many would agree with that.
A few things we really need are a SIMPLE guide to how to choose which driver for which diode such as with "this" diode I list do you use a boost, buck, linear etc. I know that some of you out there know that information and could probably say it in you sleep. The question is will you help make this a great help for everyone or not?
What I would really like to see is a list of every driver we can come up with just as I did for the diodes and give their dimensions, type (such as boost/buck), continuous positive, negative or neutral, output range, input range etc.
What I would like added to the diodes is manufacturers rating, recommended setting and output and pinout using and showing a pic of a standard 3 pin diode.
I'm looking for suggestions for anything that is really necessary to complete a build without the "fluff" which will be in links at the bottom.
This is what I have so far using copy/paste from a different thread I had started and was putting this together in:

Assuming standard battery configuration of positive to head and negative to tail cap ie case negative host:

Driver neither continuous negative, nor case positive:

Diode neutral - ok
Diode negative - isolate
Diode positive - isolate

Driver continuous negative:

Diode neutral - ok
Diode negative - ok
Diode positive - isolate (current will flow from driver L+ to bat -) Diode will probably survive

Driver continuous positive:

Diode neutral - ok
Diode negative - isolate (direct short over diode - not regulated will kill diode)
Diode positive - isolate (battery direct short) Battery will get very hot and could vent, but diode might survive

Help me put together a laser test bench

I started out on my project, looking for an IR laser of more power than what I can buy for my rifles. Then, got sucked into the whole laser field. ;) I'm an electrical engineer but have worked very little with lasers. So, in that regards I'm a total newbie.

I'm also of retirement age, so it could turn into a good hobby. ;)

One thing I really try to avoid is depending too much on others for specs and such. I also don't like reinventing the wheel, and do depend on others for things that are commonly known. For test data, I would prefer to do that myself.

So, I set out to build a basic laser test bench. The first thing I have found is it's taking more time than I want to spend, coming up to speed on what I might want in a bench. That's where you come in.

If you had, say $1000-$2000 to spend, what would you buy for such a bench? I would like to have ability to:

1) Test drivers and driver designs
2) Test raw laser diodes
3) Measure power output
4) Do some optical testing
5) Measure beam diameters and focal lengths
6) Measure diode wavelengths (if can be done reasonably cheap)
7) Are there any desktop optical benches that are cheap?

If this can be done for less than $1000 great. If not, then what is the driving cost I might eliminate. I'm not looking for a university optical lab, but I'm also not looking for a completely DIY, with pics and arduino. I'd prefer not to do too much building (i.e. designing boards and programming). I'm interested in the use of laser part and not so much at building test equipment. I'd prefer to just buy something and hook it up. ;) Something that's meant for direct readout of whatever I'm measuring.

I'm interested in the science of lasers; not the science of building test equipment. ;)

Suggestions?

Laser Distress Flares - looking for advice from esteemed experts!

$

Greetings and salutations, hope all is well.

I'm seeking the advice of forum members here, having read some of the stickies and only become more confused.

Maritime SAR flares are used to signal distress and location, and were primarily pyrotechnics. However, companies have now started producing both LED and LASER flares.

In particular, the LASER flares seem tremendously powerful and more capable than pyrotechnics in a SAR environment: however, they are also expensive.

The cheapest red laser light, running from one cr123 battery is £80!

Take a look here: Rescue Flares - Marine Flares - Safety Flares

Does anyone have recomendations for a laser pointer with similar capability for alerting people at night at approximately 20 nautical miles, while running from a single rcr123a (A rechargable cr123)?

very very HITECH and NOT much at all about pointers or hhelds-or even lasershows-
this shows all that we are NO BIG DEAL when looking AT 'The Big Picture'..

NOBODY BTW "Makes' diodes with LPF in mind-so when you start to bitch about beam shape etc -we are not even the 'secondary market' ..

anyway if you enjoy lasers you will find "PHOTONICS Spectra' a good read-
great stuff we will unlikely ever own---

I wish I had know about the Nov 2015 issue before it came as they included a BIG reference chart of the laser wavelengths -somewhat like the Periodical chart of the elements we saw in Chemistry class (HS)except its lasers-- they DO offer both a laminated copy (35.70$ or paper like what came w/ that issue for $19.95--(ouch)-

recently an article on pointers and aircraft with a nice inside view of a DPSS Green pointer..
waiting now for the OK to copy and post here..
and a great article about lasershows and how hard USA operators work to keep shows safe-- will at least post some quotes from it in THIS thread.

they ask a lot of Qs- I put my laser interest as being a Safety Officer-

here you go guys!!!

www.photonics.com/mpnpwbcp15

afaik each edition comes with a form to fill in and mail back to get a subscription

I passed up the buyers guide--
and went for the printed version ( you can choose to get in on-line)

IF anyone finds prices on stuff please post it in this thread- some AWESOME LPMs and Oscopes too--

IIRC I got a subscription by default when I joined ILDA--
