I'm a noob - how dangerous are these lasers I just got?
Alright so here's what's up:
Ten years ago I was a kid in high school and thought it was cool as hell that you could get green lasers. I bought a number of el cheapo 5mw green lasers that sold for like $14 each but were of really shoddy quality. I sort of wanted one that could burn stuff, but that was out of my price range.
Fast forward to last week. I was drunk and talking to my girlfriend about getting lasers to play with our cats. We have a dinky $2 walmart red laser of crappy quality so I decided on a drunken whim to buy a green and blue/violet laser. Found two on ebay, roughly $10 a piece, and thought they'd be perfect. Only 5mw (I wasn't looking to burn anything with these), and the build quality seemed a lot nicer than the ones I owned in the past.
These are the lasers I bought:

Well they came in the mail today, and up until now I neglected to do any proper research on them. Well it turns out these things are a lot more than 5mw, most people online have been saying they're anywhere from 35-100mw but I've also read people claiming they can be 150-200mw (albeit rarely). Apparently they're advertised as 5mw lasers to avoid conflict with laws regarding lasers but due to poor quality control vary wildly in actual performance.
I did verify (out of morbid curiosity) that the 250nm laser will ignite a green match when the focus is adjusted for it. At that point I became too scared of using the lasers any further and hopped online to look into them.
So, what did I get myself into? I feel pretty safe in assuming these should NOT be used as cat toys, but realistically how dangerous are they otherwise? If I avoid obvious things like looking directly at the laser or reflecting it at my eye, can I shine them at stuff around my house without fear? If not, can I use them outside at least? I don't own any safety goggles as I didn't think I'd be needing them, are these things a legitimate risk without them?
Any help is appreciated.

How legal are Class 4 laser pointers?
Are Class 4 laser pointers 100% legal with regards to selling, buying, transporting, etc? Other than trying to blind people and blasting airplanes, is their use pretty much unlimited?
I'm asking because I'm also a drone pilot and regulations are really tightening up.
I have to admit that I have a decoy/donor laser I paid $5 for in eBay...in case I'm forced to forfeit one.:D

2A driver circuit ... Need help
I know a lot of people buy drivers but I'm more interested in the electrical circuitry in building lasers . I recently built a 0.8mA red laser and a 1.25A blue laser with a m140 diode. I want to build a driver that can operate at 2.0A because these m140s can be pushed to 1.8A comfortably . The lm317t is only capable of 1.5A output so I bought a NTE1934 capable of 5V 2A output . I would like some sort of schematic before I attempt to build this . I have pictures of my drawings but can't figure out how to post them on here I can email them to anyone willing to help thanks

after 2 months i never get my laser or tracking info. I buy a laser from scifi laser store and i buy the fast shipping (5 days) but i always get NO INFO from tracking. Emailed many time for knowing what to do and never found a solution. I lost my money?

Cypreus-XL NDG700 Beautiful Greenie for Sale
Hey all,
I've decided to sell my NDG700 520nm / Sinner Cypreus-XL build. It's in excellent working condition, with no more than 20 minutes of combined working time on the diode.
It uses DTR's NDG700 / 1.8A X-Drive pre assembled in his copper module, and is appropriately housed in one of Sinner's solid copper Cypreus-XL hosts, which I polished to a near mirror finish.
This giant copper host has amazing heatsinking properties, and the copper module is set in place using Arctic Silver 5 high density HS compound.
It runs on two 18650 Li-ion batteries. I use Panasonic 3400mAh green flat tops, with a small neodymium magnet as a spacer between the 18650's.
It's a truly beautiful setup that generates a solid 520nm green beam.

Are there any hosts like this?
I'd like to find a good host, with the following:
1) Key back button, and side thumb button.
2) Ability to input code to allow powering (yeah, OCD safe), with #2, I guess #1 isn't required.
Because of the obvious danger of lasers, I want to make one that is absolutely foolproof (within reason), with regards to kids. What is the first thing kids do, when they pick up a flashlight? They shine it in their or someone else's eyes.
Yes, yes, I know you don't leave them laying around. But anyone who says they keep them under lock and key at all times, is probably lying. I do, but when I go take a pee, I don't lock it up. I do a quick disassembly but rarely lock mine up, if I run to the fridge or go take a dump. Only when I'm done for the day, or a long period, does it go into the safe. I don't have kids in the house but many people do.
A safe switch seems very reasonable. But do any currently exist, on hosts that we can buy? I haven't seen any.
If not, I might have to design one. I've even been thinking of putting an RFID on one so that it won't turn on, unless the RFID chip is near.

The wait goes on...
I wait as the laser slowly approaches. It seems to not be moving. It has now been three weeks, in the dry desert of anticipation. How long must I wait in the dying heat till it arrives?
My SF501B is taking a while... it's been about 3 weeks since it shipped. I think sci-fi is a great company, but with these shipping times...
Next time I pay for the most expensive expedited shipping. If there is a next time.

DIY Helping Hands
I decided to build a couple of helping hands prototypes based upon using heavy metal plates as a base holding neo mags to which either loc line or 12 gauge wire is used as an arm connected to alligators and reverse tweezers.
I have a question regarding possible additions to this.
1) Would an LED light attached to the base be helpful or
2) How do people illuminate their work...headlamp or local light...and how?
3) What do people use for magnification? Magnifier attached to helping hands, loupe or some other way?
Any suggestions for what people would like to see would be helpful

Oh, hello!
Got so caught up in buying a new laser that I forgot to introduce myself.
As to how I ended here, I was here before in 2009-2010, never made an account, just looked around but this time I thought it was time to finally join in and add laser to my list of things I'm passionate about.
- I'll keep my location private for the time being.
- I've had lasers since forever, 12 and up. Got more serious 500mw - 1W lasers when I was about 17. Was introduced to them by a few astronomy enthusiasts family members, who taught me all about safety of even cheap lasers from a young age.
- I hold a degree in Animation and VFX and Computer Science, completed both together, was 100% learning nightmare but worth it. Currently completing my first year of Law. After that I'll be going into Microbiology and Molecular Genetics. Haven't really put any of those to work yet, I just love learning really. Law(Money Maker) and Science(Deep passion and love for) will probably where I end it and get a career going.
As to how I ended here, I was here before in 2009-2010, never made an account, just looked around but this time I thought it was time to finally join in and add laser to my list of things I'm passionate about.

What's going on around the world.
I talked before about seeing shoulder fired anti armor weapons being used against Russian tanks in Syria by people chanting Allah Akbar all the way.
Well now it's finally getting some attention because of escalation?
I am afraid a lot of people don't know what is going on.
Russian oil production can't make a profit at the current market price, do you see how manipulated we are, fear not Uncle Sam wants a 10 dollar a barrel tax, we can't leave that gas money on the table and let people get used to low prices, they may make the tax 20 or 50 a barrel in time as this is expected to last for quite a while.

I have some questions about this safety google Eagle Pair® 190-540nm Slip Over Laser Safety Goggles
I now ordered it :wave: Now my Question is i build a Laser with an NDB7875
And an 2.4A Driver and an G2 lens. When i want to pop a ballon or burn a match is this glasses protective enough for like hold a match in my Hand and then light it ? Or is the reflection from the light brown matchwood to strong. :can:
