Hi LPM,I would like to share this cool PCB vice for setting and soldering of drivers.
It will hold firmly all sizes of drivers and boards. This keeps your work solid and stationary so no wobble when working. This takes the W out of work for me anyway. Enjoy as I did posting this tool of the trade.

520 nm diode-won't need Infrared Goggle-more efficient than 532?

$

Hi

I am new to the hobby-I've been reading about DPSS vs direct diodes and if I read correctly, the 532 nm are DPSS and get to 532 nm via 1064 nm infrared (which is also why cheap 532 nm put out an invisible infrared beam-no filter).

I have a 520 nm 1 Watt (Challenger 2( being built by Sanwu- as I understand it (could be wrong) 520 nm diodes are direct-not using 1064 and a 2X frequency (divider?). So my Eagle 6 OD 190-540 should suffice?

It will use a single 18650 battery (I already have a collection from "lesser lasers" (IE 303, and "1Watt Gatling host 532 nm"-which judging from it's weak burning is likely far less).

Am I mistaken in thinking the 520 nm are more efficient than the 532?
I assume (from reading) that the 532 nm "1 watt Gatling" is less than 150 mwatt. It will light a BLACK match head-when I make a focal point- at roughly 4-6 inches-in 10 seconds or so. I am guessing I should never do that again-without 1064 nm protection!

Where do you guys store your lasers?

Hi, I am a new member of the forum and have started a laser collection. I bought one of those 1.6w Thor M2 and it came with a nice metal case to store the laser , batteries, charger, glasses, and lens'. The only issue is, I have so many laser 301/303's (like 15 or so) and some cool silver hosted burning lasers from eBay(only about $10 each but they burn especially the red and violet) and I've been storing them in the bubble wrap they came with in the original packaging (bubble mailer) and I find it to be very messy and unappealing.

I've heard of people using cigar cases to store lasers but I'm not sure where to start, I guess I'll have to buy a Walmart makeup or art case and design my own foam to store my lasers in.

I haven't been able to find any source that can sell me those nice metallic cases you often receive with the high power eBay lasers such as the Thor M2's or Gatling style lasers. On laserpointerstore they have an option to add on a metallic case for $15 when you purchase a laser but I wish they sold the cases separate cause I'm looking at ordering more Thor lasers from wish and eBay but some do not come with cases.

Any suggestions? Tips?

A 488 edition to the collection!

Finally have the chance to add 488 to my collection with the 60mW Pocket Series from Sanwu. :D Absolutly love this host, very small and uses a single 10440 battery.

The Pocket host:

This is a comparison with a standard "Newwish" type pen.

Some 488nm beamshots:

Here is the 488 alongside the other lasers in my collection, a matching set from Lilly Electronics. From left to right 660, 635, 532, 488, 450, 405.

And last but not least some attempts and writing with lasers using 20 second exposures, first with the 450nm, then the 488, and then all lasers together. :D

Hi, here's a short introduction on myself.
I am from Elkton, MD, my name is Ryan but I go by GLAZO I consider myself a hobbist of lasers as I've recently taken interest again and bought roughly 2 dozen lasers in the last month (ranging from laser pens to laser 301/303s to "military grade" lasers and the Thor M2.

I've been reading through this forum quite much for about a month now and decided to make an account and join in on the fun.
I hope I can be of help eventually when I get to understand how lasers and such work in depth but for now I'm a learner and I'm soaking my brain of so much of your guys' information.

Thanks!

Laser From Ebay

Hi guys😃,

I'm new on this forum and I would like to ask more information about a laser found on ebay.

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F311895525851

After reading online I know that ebay is NOT SAFE to buy lasers but a Friend bought this monster:

I noticed that it can burn and I'm sospiscius...

So I use an ir and uv Hoya filter (I'm a photographer in free time) to see if it can burn also with this filter mounted on...

HOYA | The Difference is Clear

It can burn again (paper, plastic wood and so on)...

So, I was worried and I suggest to my friend to use this laser only external and pointed to the sky (stars).

Someone of you tested it?

It can be dangerous for infrared or uv?

I noticed that goggles includes are very cheap and dangerous (my 303 green laser, that I use to point stars, is visible though them...). The blue laser can burn this cheap goggles and pass through.

So, what kind of laser is this?

What kind of goggles do you suggest? (if is it safe to use indoors).

Regards

Ath.

New Glass Wedge

I found a nice, large glass 'wedge' (triangular prism) at TJMaxx that was just BEGGING me to shoot beams through it :) It's approx 7" on its long side.

So I did.

Quite interesting results how different the beams look inside - especially the 405nm. You can really tell after I added some fog. I have a mirror under the whole thing, and some shots I left it just like that, others I put a beam-stop behind it OR another mirror.

I used some labbies on this one:
532nm
650nm
473nm
405nm
445nm

and a few have a 490nm (pointer, as I preferred it's beam over the labby).

Enjoy!!!

Hi.

It's been 3 years since my last post here, even more since I was active in any sort of capacity.
I am missing this hobby, and thinking of perhaps re-acquainting myself with it. Starting with this forum.

I see a lot of new faces here, so hi everybody. Name's Eud. I'm from Croatia.

I used to run a machine shop here, making heatsinks and all but I've removed the links from my signature... for the time being.

I could do with a quick sum-up of some important stuff, such as links to buy/order various stuff, reputable sellers, recent forum happenings I should know about?
Last I know, O-like was a good place to get cheap green lasers and misc parts. DX for misc flashlights, hosts and "office supplies" of laser hobby.

DTR used to run a shop with some great stuff at great prices. What's the current situation like?

Man I'm feeling lost just like a decade ago when my account was fresh. If you could help me get up to speed, that'd be great!

EDIT - Also, rep system appears to be new? People didn't use to have dozens of thousands-Edit, scratch that, hundreds of millions- of rep AFAIK.

Custom hosts.

Been out of the loop for a while, but as it happens my last job was cheating me out of overtime and there's been a class action and settlement. So, I'm going to be in the market for a new laser soon!

Is Ehgemus still in business? I have one of his hosts and it's great, but I know he took a leave of absence of sorts. Who is the current custom host person that everyone turns to? Thanks and looking forward to getting back in the scene :)

Hi All,

My hobby is electronics and radio building and I have had a fascination for lasers. I have been doing a lot of reading on the safety issues and found this website very useful.

I have a lot to learn but I am not in a hurry. I just want to be safe.

Experimental Pitch Adjustable LD Mount

Well.....Just a little concept drawing I did. We can have it all !!

With a standard LSP style mount....Yaw adjustability is available....but not Pitch.

See Drwg. PALDM-V7 attached. This might be one way to use a three ( 3) piece unit to achieve Pitch Adjustability !!! Good solid contact at all interfaces. About +/- 2mm travel....More than enough Pitch translation !!!

Outer slots in the lower seat give Yaw control. Upper slots provide travel and set for the upper seat.

Just a thought....Until I machine one.....I will not be sure the design is feasible !!!

Always thnk'in !!! Never seen one like this before. Any commercial manufacture that makes this.....you're welcome....Hmmm....not to humble hey !!!

Oh Well....It might work !!!

Hello from Washington State

Hello everybody, (why does Doctor Nick's voice always play in my head when I read that?)

My name is Mark, I'm from Snohomish County, Washington, I'm 30 and I love lasers. I've been poking around these forums for a couple of years now and finally decided to register, now that I've been quite thoroughly bitten by the laser bug lol. I've read up on forum rules/etiquette and safety quite a bit so hopefully I won't unintentionally rock the boat. I've recently bought a number of lasers, a 1W 445nm Spartan from Dragon Lasers, a 30mW 589nm Spartan, a 1W 520nm Sanwu Guardian II, a 5W 470nm Sanwu Striker, a 1W Sanwu Silver series 635nm, a 500mW 405 Sanwu Pocket, and a 100mW 492nm Sanwu Pocket, as well as the relevant rated eye protection from Survival Lasers (not to mention beam expanders for all the Sanwu lasers apart from the two pockets), so I feel pretty well equipped now. A far shot from the Wicked Lasers 130mW Executive Pro I bought in 2008 for the same price as the 5W 470nm Striker:mad: lol.

So anyways just wanted to say hello, and I look forward to learning more from those more knowledgeable than I.

Happy Lasing,

Mark

Review on Laserpointerstore's Pocket LPM

Full disclosure: I received this LPM free of charge for the purpose of reviewing it.
Hi All,
Today I am reviewing the 10W Pocket LPM by LaserPointerStore.
A little bit of history about this LPM:
The first version was released in August of 2017. To put in simple terms, it received a lot of negative feedback from the community. The main issue that was brought to attention was the smoking of the sensor’s coating with lasers running way below 15W. Fast forward to March 2018, a newly improved version was released. LPS decided that 15W was too ambitious, and the new version has maximum power reading of 10W. I will review it in this thread and compare some of the results with a professional grade (Ophir head I think) LPM from a near by school who allowed me to use their LPM. However, theirs is rated at a maximum of 3W, so only lasers lower than 3 watts were tested.

I received the package very well packed with a lot of bubble wrapping:

The LPM is smaller in real life than I thought. It is about the size of a pager from the olden days.

Here you can see the ON/OFF button and the sensor (covered with tape)

A micro-usb charging port:

The LPM came charged. Turning the device on, you can see the nice red backlight. If you are ordering one and use a lot of green, blue or purple lasers, make sure to get it in red, otherwise you won’t be able to see it with your protection glasses on (YES they should be on if you are using a 5mw< laser)

Starting off the test with a Sanwu pocket 488nm, advertised to output 60mw:

The meter gave stable reading of 52mw within 5 seconds in. Comparing it to my previous measurement using a professional LPM, this was a really nice result.

Next we have a 405nm BDR-209@530nm with a G9 lens:

A stable reading of 725mw compared to a previous reading of 745mw.

My new NDB7675 9mm 462nm running on my very old (2012) FMT V2 Boost Driver set to 1.5A:

A reading of 1312mw compared to a previous 1410mw reading.

Sanwu Guardian 1W 520nm:

Next up we have my N465nm set at 4.0A. One unfortunate thing about this laser is that it rolled off the table and fell after the test. The diode died :( but I still have a picture of the reading so hopefully it didn’t die in vain

Finally my NUBM44 with a G7 set to 4.5A:

It took about 20 seconds to stabilize

Final thoughts:
Overall this LPM performed very nicely in my opinion. It is small enough to really fit in my jeans but performs just fine even with 6W lasers. I have no idea how they managed to make something like that lol. I didn’t have any issues with the coating smoking, and as you can see below, there are no burning marks:

If you are buying this LPM as a hobbyist and looking for a fairly close estimate to how much power your laser is outputting, I would recommend this product. If you are an electrical engineer calibrating lasers for LASEK eye surgeries, then you may need to look for something else (that will cost more than 80 bucks).

Question About the BDR-209 900mw diode?

$
0
0
So I purchased a 900mw 405nm module from DTR, Came with a acrylic lens replaced that with a 405nm coated 3 element glass lens. Set my driver to 6.36v @ 670Ma, This diode is a beast. burns better than my 2w blue laser. Could be do to better energy absorption on material with that wavelength and or the near round shape of the beam. Anyway. My naive self was using an led driver, This one to be exact https://www.ebay.com/itm/5A-Lithium-...72.m2749.l2648

It died after about 30 minutes of solid use. Just suddenly turned off:cryyy:

I know 405nm diodes are very sensitive. I'm going to build a LM317 based driver, My question is is there any extra protection I should include for this diode it being 405nm? And whats the recommended current for builds on this diode? I think 670ma may be pushing its limits for extended use.

Here are some beam shots of it when it was working.
I'm designing a 3D printable threaded host, Its going well so far. The fins on the heatsink i'm using lets air through the host which helps with cooling. I just had the top piece made in the pics. And no, The final host will not be pink.

Hello!! Something I have not posted before, as I never think stills do the media the justice it deserves - Lumia. I did some the other night in hopes of getting some gifs worthy of a post.

At 1st I tried being tricky and placed the glass wedge in front of the Lumia media, but quickly pulled that out :)

I did a "3-greenish" with the 490/505/532, but I don't think I selected any to upload.
