First build, custom driver advice?

I recently broke my first laser pointer, a 75mW 405 Wicked Laser Nano that a friend gave me. Naturally, I've chosen to replace it... with a fully custom 2W 462nm build.

A key feature that I want is the ability to adjust the current in use, I've found plenty of adjustable drivers so far but they all rely on tiny 10-turn trimpots that aren't designed to be accessible when mounted. Ideally, I want a handheld laser with a knob that will let me change it from 'stupidly dangerous' to 'mildly irresponsible' and back without having to crack it open in between.

I have a couple main questions:
1. Is it bad for the health of the diode to run it at low current? It's nominally a 2W diode at 1.8A, but the testing images show it functioning at 25mW at 200mA. Is this an acceptable way to run it in everyday use, or only for brief periods while showing the response curve?
2. Is it bad for the health of the diode to adjust the current while it's operating?
3. Am I going to need to make a full driver board, or can I just cut the 10-turn pot off an existing one and run new wires to a new pot?

I'll be doing all of my testing with a 2W 445nm diode since it's about 1/5 the price, and I bought a benchtop 50-3000mA driver that looks pretty simple but won't fit in a reasonably sized host. Ideally, I'd love the finished version to include a tiny arduino of some sort with a readout for real-time current draw and approximate wattage. If there's a reason that's very doable or very impossible, I'd love to know about it.

Thanks in advance for your help!

sanwu laser beam expander

Hello
i wanted to ask if some of you guys have experience with the sanwu laser expander
https://www.sanwulasers.org/product/x3beamexpander

it expands the beam 3 times with it
but does this also mean that the beam will be watered down (more transparent) ?
so when looking at the side of the beam it will be not so visible anymore?

also does the expander works on the sanwu laser with the head caps attached?

https://www.sanwulasers.org/product/attackcap
(i would really want to know if this would attach to the crown head cap)

thank you in advance

Hey there, I'm Ash, in Portland, Oregon. I started looking at the viability of adding a legal laser show for a Pink Floyd tribute band I am running. This seemed to be the site that appeared in most relevant searches, so here I am. Though I will no doubt fall into a hundred rabbit holes here, my main purpose is to find a local hobbyist who we could hire to design and run something for our future shows.

Got an 18 pack the other day and grabbed the first 3 up front in the crate this morning and cracked them open and all 3 were double yoked:whistle:
Wondering how many more might be in this case:thinking:
Does a double yoke egg bring you good luck or bad luck?
Was it the roosters doing as no way it's the same hen's eggs?
RB had told me the 405 lasers are great for corraling his chicken's, maby he mistakenly is on to something:eek:
:can::can:

Edit: made 3 more eggs and still the same double yokes...

burning green laser

Good morning all!

I wanted to get myself a super cool green laser in which i can pop balloons and burn matchsticks.

I was about to pull the trigger on the Wicked Laser's Nano but I had read a few threads saying those were overpriced.

So hopped on the form to see what you guys recommended.

I'd like the laser to be green, powerful enough to burn and operate on a 18650.

Hit me up!

Good morning

Good morning, thank you for allowing me to be here.

I seek out the perfect laser for my world domination scheme. The crux of my plan is having many lasers mounted to the foreheads of great white sharks.

I am collecting data on the perfect laser fit for my quest. You may refer to me as Doctor.

Please help in my quest for the perfect laser.

I just read some of the rules about buying selling and trading but what about repairing? I understand one must have a decent reputation to be trusted to any reasonable degree in order to conduct any type of business while using the forum medium but what about repairs?

Honestly I like lasers, I can safely operate one but all I want to do is mail my laser to someone, have them repair it, pay them via paypal and trust they will mail it back.

I do not really want to engage in conversations nor take forever trying to come up with things to say on a forum... any advice?

Lumia parts?

Posted this on Photonlexicon as well, I have the same ID on there as here. I don't post much, but more on this site than on PL.

There has been much talk lately of the 565/575 yellow modules from two differnet suppliers.

I have two of the 565nm modules in hand, and two of the 575's on the way from Optlaser. I am not as much into the pointer/handheld thing as I like Lumia and sound reactive scanners much more. I do have a 500mW rgb, ttl scanner and a Laser Dock dongle as well. I got the 565/575 modules mostly for the Lumia and other scan devices. The red/green combo for yellow is ok on a lissajous scanner is ok, but gets broken up to red and green on a Lumia. So, the new yellow are great for that.

My post here is about Lumia glass disks. I have access to multiple glass door/window shops as well as stained glass/ glass art shops in the area that I am in. I have collected many different types of patterned glass that make some awsome displays, and they are readily available to me. I have the diamond hole saw cutters and drill bits to make disks from 30mm to 120mm with center holes of 2mm to 6mm.

I have also sourced slow RPM DC geared motors and PWM controllers I am currently experimening with. For example, 12v 3RPM motor with PWM control, I can slow down to less than .5 rpm but will still do the max of 3 RPM. I know, for the most part the slower the better with Lumia, but to each their own.

I am just trying to gauge the demand for this type of equipment. I am not out to make a butt load of money, just to share knowledge and possibly provide parts and equipment for others that are into this part of the hobby.I might be able to provide a basic kit; motor, PWM controller, power supply and a couple or 3 disks to try out, assembly, your'e on you own. I can provide basic diagrams and photos of my setups as a base.

If you are the DIY everything type, I can provide links to the motor, PWM controller, hole cutters and drill bits that I have used. As I said, it's not about the money, knowledge is key and self gratification is awsome, to me at least :D

What do you guys think?

Jeff

Hello,
I just found this forum. I am a flashaholic and gaining interest in lasers. I came here to learn what I can.
It seems there are tons of lasers on the market and I have no clue which are good builds, which are junk and what are considered good buys.

I hope to learn a lot here. Thanks to all.

Hi everyone,

I will be adding some more items to this thread shortly, but to start......

Hyperium LPM "enclosure only" - Custom
Put my unit into another case, so my old enclosure is up for grabs.
This is a hard PVC enclosure with an aluminium front plate. All internal mounting screws/spacers are included, as is the switch, but you will need to source a 9v battery holder as i have re-used mine, and create some custom buttons. The battery holder fits into the side.

Price: $15usd
Postage: $8usd Deutsche post (6-9 business days international)
Payment: Paypal

More items to come................

What items are required to build a custom Laser pen?

$

Hello all,

I'm looking for a brief list of what I would need to build my own laser pen.

I know I'll need a laser diode & a power source, but the in-between is where I need some assistance. Looking around online I get a variety of different answers, so I want something generic I can follow.

I am planning on making a custom laser pen with a 532nm 50-100mW diode. (also, where is a good place to get laser diodes at a decent price?)

Thanks in advance for your help! :thanks:

I’ve had this laser for about a year, it get bright for maybe a second then gets barely visible. Is this laser junk or should I hold on to it?

Well, that was.... interesting. I blew a disk in my neck and I've been off-line for a couple months. It took my right arm away for a few scary weeks but fortunately, this is a common enough problem that 'they' have gotten very good at repairing it. Outpatient surgical clinic right between an IHOP and a Buffalo Wild Wings.

What's new?

Just a person or a place where i can learn how to build lasers from scratch and understand what specific components do and how the electricity behind them works.
I haven't really found many places that explain in detail.

Hello guys, long time lurker and a laser enthusiast here!

Hello everyone, I loved lasers since the day I got my first toy with a red laser diode in it, it was just amazing to have beam travel a long distance and produce the red dot on far away buildings and trees.

Anyway, I've lurked around this site for so long and viewed many threads about the types of lasers I wanted to know more about/build. I made a 500 mW IR laser with a LM317 driver a few weeks ago, which is also my profile pic. It's not portable and the heatsink is an obvious overkill, but I'm happy with it as it burns things and isn't bad for a first build. :D Here's a video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9vA...ature=youtu.be

Currently I'm gathering parts for a homemade CO2 laser, as I already have the glass tube, mirrors and a high voltage power supply, I just have to get or make a vacuum pump from somewhere. I'll create a thread if I successfully complete the build, when I get time for it.

Laser dot not perfect even with brand new lens

Hello,

I've been having issues with my 1W blue gatling style laser for a while now and I'm not sure how to fix it. After I was not able to completely clean the old lens I purchased a brand new three layer lens for it.
While the dot is much better now than it was with the old lens, there are still two areas around the dot where it is not perfect. Since I don't really know how to explain it, here is a picture:

It is a bit difficult to see on the picture because of the bright dot but in reality those areas are much more noticeable. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Since I already replaced the lens this must be caused by something else. Please ignore the beam/line going through the dot on the picture because that is just from the camera, in reality you cannot see that.

Thanks!

sanwu challenger 2 or striker series?

Hello
i wanted to ask you guys your opinion on the sanwu challenger 2 and striker series
because i can't decide
i want to buy the 1W 520nm , 4 or 5W 470nm and 1W 635nm
the challenger 2 and striker series cost approx. the same

the striker series is bigger but is it very very big?

i know that with the striker series the duty cycle is unlimited
and with the challenger 2 the only disadvantege with the 4W 470nm is the one minute on and off (the rest is unlimited)

for you guys who also have lasers that also needs to rest after a minute, is this bothersome and annoying?
or is it something you get used to?

love to hear your opinions
thanks in advance

Hello there,

I'm Chris and I am currently 21 years old.
I am not that much into lasers but I do know a few basics like different wavelengths and their colors, different types of lenses, fluorescence and stuff like that. I am also the proud owner of a cheap, chinese 1W blue gatling laser (and a few even cheaper laser pointers ;)). I found this forum when I was searching a solution for a problem which I had with one of my lasérs and...well...here I am :D

Hello, I have built a few 2 watt lasers before with hosts from survival laser, but I am looking for something a little larger and with some more power for a decent price. Thanks for any info you have. I would love something in any color except red or UV. I am also looking for hosts if you could also let me know if anyone is selling those. Thanks
