best wavelenght to ionize air

$

hello everybody,I want to build laser, focus the beam and turn air into plasma.

My problem is,I dont know what is the best wavelenght to do it with.I want a wavelenght that is most efficiently absorbed by air molecules. Please dont show me that chart of atmosferic absorption, its useless becose its about the light from sun that have to travell through all the atmospheric layers, spectral absorption from heigh of 100km to ground is something completly different to laser being used at sea level at distance of 10 cm.

What I learned so far ( correct me if I am wrong )

1. every type of atom ( nitrogen,oxygen,ozone,... ) have its own unique spectral lines,if you hit the atom with laser that have wavelenght like one of its spectral lines, then its going to be absorbed more, the laser is going to travell less distance,it is going to turn into heat in shorter distance

2. pressure and humidity affect the absorption at given freqency, something something about spectral line broadening due to water vapour,I am not sure

I was thinking, since nitrogen makes up the biggest part of air, hitting one of its spectral lines would be the best? I tried to google Nitrogen infrared spectral lines but I didnt find anything

$120 shipped. Conus. This is great for experiments.

For sale is a H980L-800B laser. It's from Laserbtb. I don't have an LPM but the rated power is 800mw. It can burn dark objects, even leaves when focused. Leather can be burned from a foot or two away when unfocused. Goggles really are necessary. It comes with a little plug dongle and a metal pin. The plug dongle can be cut so the laser can be turned on from a distance with another switch. It comes with two metal keys. It has a shutter and adjustable focus. It is very sturdy. It comes uses one 16340 battery.
Doesn't come with IR indicator card. If I find it I'll throw it in. You need goggles that can block this wavelength.

Pros:
• Laser burns dark colored objects well
• Laser has lots of safety features
• Runs a while on batteries
• Has a long duty cycle
• Pinpoint focusable

I don’t have a power meter available but it’s spec’d at 800mw. Here are the factory specs:

GUIDE: I want my first laser!

Hello folks!

Recently, I've seen a surge in threads creating by people who are looking to take their first steps into the laser hobby.
Many people ask questions like, "What's the best laser I can get for under $50?" and "Where can I find a good burning laser?"
This thread is intended to answer those questions.

Please remember that with any powerful laser, safety goggles are a NECESSITY. They will be discussed later in this thread.

Let's start off with:

"I just want a cheap, visible beam!"

This one's not a tough one. If you're looking for a visible beam with a laser that won't break in 30 minutes, go with Sanwu's 304.
It's a nice little greenie, and at 40mW, it'll be more than enough power to have a visible beam at night.
If you'd like a little more punch to it, you can choose the 80mW version, which will make it possible to pop balloons and light black matches if properly focused.
Sanwu checks each and every one of its 304 series lasers for defects and proper power, unlike 301 lasers from eBay, which have almost zero quality control.

This laser takes a single 18650 battery - I will discuss batteries and chargers later in the thread!

Next up:

"I want a cheap laser that can burn!"

If what you want is burning power, you shall have it! The Thor M-II has got you covered.
This particular laser which I have linked is a version that has a glass lens. Unlike acrylic lenses, they will not melt with prolonged use, which is a huge plus. The extra $10 or so that you pay for this laser over acrylic-lensed competitors is well worth it.
The Thor M-II is extremely powerful, and also EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.
It has the power to light things on fire, and WILL destroy your eyesight with a single mistake.

Therefore, safety goggles are absolutely necessary, and will be discussed later in the thread, as will the 16340 batteries which this laser uses.

Next up:

"I want a high-quality laser pointer!"

If what you want is quality and not power, there is nothing better than LaserGlow's Anser.
This pointer will never fail you - it's the perfect laser for a classroom or presentation setting!
Alternatively, if you'd like a little more power behind your pointer, you may want to purchase LaserBTB's LP-532 instead.
Choose any of the "532nm pointer" options - but remember that they aren't completely eye-safe (especially the 20mW and 50mW version), meaning that a stupid mistake could potentially lead to eye damage.
As long as you don't use them around glass or mirrors, however, it's highly unlikely that they'll hurt you.

All of these lasers take common AAA batteries, which you probably already have! So there's no need to discuss them later in the thread. :)

Next!

"I want a star-pointing laser!"

This one's already been answered in the previous question! Purchase LaserBTB's LP-532, and choose "532nm pointer 50mW".
Be sure to select "IR filter installed" - it'll prevent dangerous infrared light from leaking.
I also recommend selecting "Mount with tripod" - having a tripod for your laser is quite nice for star-pointing.
This laser takes primary or rechargeable AAA batteries! :D

Next!

"I want the best burner money can buy!"

Go for the Sanwu Spiker 7W 445nm.
It's the most powerful commercially available handheld laser!
That's a mouthful -- but basically, it's the WickedLasers Arctic, except 7 times more powerful, with a nicer host, longer battery life, and faster shipping.
Please note that the divergence isn't great, which means the beam spreads out in a line shape. It's still the best burner on the market!

This laser takes two gigantic 26650 batteries, which will be discussed later in the thread. :)
Since this laser is ABSURDLY POWERFUL, high quality safety goggles are ***ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY***!!!
A single mistake without them and you WILL BE BLINDED PERMANENTLY!!!
Scroll down if you'd like to read about goggles. :)

BATTERIES AND CHARGERS

Does the laser I recommended require 16340 batteries? Try these: https://liionwholesale.com/collectio...ant=4431248580
Does the laser I recommended require 18650 batteries? Try these: https://liionwholesale.com/collectio...nt=12534245700
Does the laser I recommended require 26650 batteries? Try these: https://liionwholesale.com/collectio...nt=14135870212

I recommend this charger for your batteries: https://www.amazon.com/Nitecore-Inte...ecore+d2&psc=1
I also recommend purchasing twice as many batteries as your laser needs, so that you may switch out your batteries at any time.
These are the best batteries I can find, and at the best prices. A baby sheep dies every time someone purchases an UltraFire battery. :)

SAFETY GOGGLES

If you're purchasing the Thor M-II, use these Uvex safety goggles. These are the cheapest goggles that will protect you. eBay goggles are NOT ENOUGH!
They have been shown to reduce a 2W blue laser to less than 1mW. DO NOT USE THESE FOR GREEN LASERS!

If you're purchasing the Sanwu Spiker 7W 445nm, Uvex safety goggles are NOT enough. You must purchase these Eagle Pair safety goggles from Survival Laser, and use them every single time you use the laser. Otherwise, you WILL be blinded by your laser.

If you're purchasing a green laser I recommended, like the Sanwu 304, LaserBTB LP-532, or LaserGlow Anser, you most likely won't need safety goggles. Just be careful and avoid using your laser around glass or mirrors. If you're paranoid, you can purchase the Eagle Pair safety goggles I recommended above.

I will be adding more of my recommendations later. If you've got any questions to ask, or would like a recommendation, make a comment and I'll add my response to the thread! :D

Interlock key replacement??

$

I recently picked up a NEC/Showa GLS 3135 PSU and matching GLG 3135 argon head. It's an OEM only 488/515 setup from the Olympus FV1000 confocal microscope.

Everything was working fine, but the interlock key was snapped off in the lock. I just used whatever was around to twist the cylinder on and off when I used it, but a couple of days ago, I had the genius idea of pulling the key stub out and brazing it to a washer so I could actually use it as a key.

Everyone probably is aware of this already, but I realized far too late that the key was cheap pot metal, and it sort of melted under the torch. Does anyone know (or have any guesses) as to where I could get a replacement key or blanks? I really don't feel like replacing the switch for some reason. I would rather mill a new key (from steel stock this time ) before opening up the PSU. I feel like fitting a new lock would be a headache, might have to ream the panel opening, find out power ratings, etc.

I'll probably end up milling it from scratch, but just thought I'd ask in case anyone knew. Maybe Olympus would be helpful if I called them up? I know Showa doesn't even deal with people outside Japan for their gas lasers, and I believe they officially discontinued the line recently.

Hi ,
Just sharing this build with all of you folks, here is a full copper heat sink and focus adapter i incorporated a battery tube extension so it will take two 18650's instead of two 18350's. The G ball is still intact and the SXD is set to 4A with 24gauge silicone wire through out the connections. I also took the lens out of a barrel of a spare i had so i could use the focus adapter to finish off the sink and keep the G ball clean of dust and dirt.Well hope you will enjoy the show folks.

Any problems with NiteCore 18650's?

$

I have 4 of these: "NiteCore 2300mAH NL183 High Discharge Performance w/ Integrated battery overcharge/discharge protection circuits". I usually use them in a flashlight which uses a Cree XML-T6 and they tend to perform extremely well.

I thought I would try one in the 405nm setup I put together from parts from DTR (405nm diode in the module with driver) and an S4 host from Survival Laser. Apparently that was a bad idea...should have stuck with the Panasonic 18650's I've been using. These NiteCore are about 4mm longer than the rest of the 18650's I have.

I put the battery in the host, turned it on and the beam flashed very bright for about 2 seconds then went dark. Didn't even go LED...just dark. Took the battery out of the host, tried my trusty Panasonic 18650 and still nothing. I get voltage on the output of the driver, and if I hook up a high output Cree LED the driver powers it so I assume the driver is ok.

Is is possible that the NiteCore battery with it's "High Discharge Performance" gave it a 'kill surge'?

I just ordered a new 405nm from DTR in the meantime.

'Solarstorm' Pocket Rocket

A 405nm Build with a 'BDR-209 16X'

Hi guys, here's a simple, yet pretty cool build in a neat little host from 'Solarstorm', not to be confused with The 'Solarforce' company that we see used in builds from time to time.
This host was originally going to be used in a different build which didn't work out, ...so having this little pocket sized host and heatsink hanging around, I thought I'd put it to good use. :D
To keep this project a fairly low cost affair, I decided on the BDR-209 16X 405nm diode/module from DTR, as it's one of the lowest cost diodes at his store.
It is also one of the prettiest wavelengths to view IMO, especially when enhanced with a little smoke or fog, not to mention that it burns like nobodies business! ;)

There's not a lot to say about this build as it's a pretty straightforward LED flashlight conversion with a homemade aluminum heatsink and a polished s.s. steel focus adapter.
It's pretty much a plug-n-play unit that turned out to be a pretty good looking finished product.

Here are a few of its vital statistics followed by some photos.

Components Used For This Build:
  • Solarstorm S3 LED Flashlight.
  • BDR-209 16X Diode/Module with G-2 Lens set at approx. 500mA (DTR).
  • Custom Aluminum Heatsink.
  • Custom Polished S.S. Focus Adapter.
  • Arctic Alumina Thermal Compound.
  • AW 16340 Button Top 550mAh Li-Ion Battery.

Dimensions & Weight:
  • Length = 104mm (4.1")
  • Diameter = 24mm (0.94")
  • Weight w/Battery = 98g (3.46oz)

Measured Power Output:
  • G-2 Lens = 1.094W (Max.)

Picture Time!

Solarstorm flashlight, pre-transformation.

Exploded view.
Note - This host does not come apart at the tail end, only as shown below.

View of the battery side of contact board mounted in head, and the battery tube/switch end with the Ever present battery orientation identification sticker. :yh:

The Solarstorm in my hand for a general size reference.

These two photos are showing the focused beam on the left, and the unfocused beam on the right, as it exits the focus adapter.

Focused to a spot approx. 6" from laser.

A beam shot with the lights on and a very light fog, still pretty impressive!

That's it for now, thanks for looking, and I hope you enjoyed the beams!

Review of cheap "5mw" laser on ebay

Hey!
I bought this laser (532nm green) u can get it in alot of colors
Neu Grün Lila Rot Laser Pointer Stift Strahl Stern Zeiger Pen Beam Präsentation | eBay

The package came with just 1 laser and a single charger without any wallplug

It arrived at my house after 15 days.

Here is my results for my test of it (Got no pics)

Durability

I dropped it once from 1 meter and it didnt break but the laser diode can get toasted if you run around and have it turned on for a while.
My laser broke because i used it alot in a short period of time

The casing was made out of aluminium.

Laser

The beam becomes visible in daylight when the sun begins to go down.
In sunlight it is bright and the laser is very visible too
You can see the laser far away even in day light.

The laser cant burn stuff and does not hurt if you shine it at your skin.
It said on its warning sticker that is was 5mw but i do not trust that.

This is my first ever review so its pretty bad but hope you enjoy! :)

405nm Photoluminescence

$

A while back one dark night in my house I used a 405nm pointer and as I swept it across a white wall, that portion illuminated glowed a pale white for about a second of time; even old white paint from my grandparents hoosier cabinet is photoluminescent. It's not something I expected. I also discovered plaster in my house photoluminescences too. Not something I expected. Curiously, I have some titanium dioxide (tio2) it does not photoluminesce as I recall.

Question about drivers and ripple current

$
0
0
Hello, everybody here knows (or should) that laser diodes need a constant current driver to last some time. Often it is mentioned, that the driver should output a low noise Voltage too.

I am thinking of building a laser but there are some questions I have about this ripple problem.
The maximal ripple current isn't mostly mentioned in any data sheet. In high power diodes almost never. So one problem with high ripple current is to over drive the diode for a short time and kill it with this small pulse of to high power, but is this the only problem?

I am asking this question because I would like to build a pulse width modulated laser to regulate the output power. Building a driver with adjustable current wouldn't be that nice because all diodes behave really non linear.
However modulating the laser would be like having a maximum of possible ripple.
Is everything fine as long as I stay under the absolute maximum rating of current during an pulse?
Can I test a laser driver with some usual silicon diodes to simulate a laser diode and test the behavior of the driver?

Greetings, MrMcChicken :yh:
