Hello from Northern California

Hello all, seems I jumped the gun by going straight to conversations without first making a proper introduction. My name's Cory and I live in Isleton CA, I can't blame anyone who's never heard of it since I've literally met people who reside 20 miles away who don't know where it is.

I've lurked around here and enjoyed the laser hobby for years now, and have even done business outside of the forum with folks here but haven't gotten around to actually signing up until now - in all truthfulness because I needed to PM one of the members. I was probably hesitant to create a profile because of the many internet forums that I'm involved in, this is the only one where I have very limited knowledge about the subject, it's a lot easier to fit in when you have a knowledge base comparable to the established members which isn't the case for me here. Anyway, it looks like a great community and I'm glad for the opportunity to learn from the experience and know-how of the people here.

What kind of rod is it?

Guys, can someone give me an opinion of what you think this is? I'm being told it is a ND YAG by the seller and someone else who saw the photo that it is ND Glass, probably Russian manufacture.

Laser rangefinder viewed through an IR digital camera

Months ago I asked if anyone here had a small 905 nm laser rangefinder they could try to record the IR pulse laser output from using a cell phone, no one had a rangefinder to try with. After returning from working in Iraq, I finally purchased a used rangefinder and tried to do so using my iPhone, but found the infrared output to be extremely weak due to the cameras internal IR filter which would not allow much of the invisible light to pass through to the camera sensor.

Due to having such poor results with the cell phone camera, I recently bought a Luna Optics IR/VIS camera and recorded the following video. This video is of the 905 nm output of a Precision Pro V400 905 nm golf rangefinder viewed using Luna Optics digital LN-DB60-HD "night vision" infrared camera from a distance of about 500 feet, as measured by the rangefinder.

How much power does the rangefinder output? I measured the output power using a Coherent Lasercheck power meter and found it to be about 1.5 milliwatts average power. The peak pulse power is reported to be 75 watts which the IR camera I used to record the beam appears to agree with, considering how bright the beam was when spot on at me. The video appears much closer, this is due to the zoom feature of the camera.

edit;

Here's a photo of the laser diode board inside the rangefinder, I bought a lot of them cheap, don't worry, I didn't kill my one and only rangefinder to get to this board, but I bought a lot of them to harvest these boards from, most of them have a LCD display problem, that is why I was able to get them so cheap:

Lasers are now being used to treat toenail fungus, vids on the web.

I'm not a fat cat who can afford these doctors, prefer to experiment my self with short bursts each day to see if I can treat myself (I do wear my laser glasses)

Do IR lasers penetrate keratin / protein better than green laser ?

What MW power recommended ?

A friend who does laser shows told me I need an UV laser.

Hey there-

I have had a strong interest in LASERs since I was a small boy. I read all sorts of books and back then they were very expensive. Now that I have my own small boys they are much affordable, or at least it seemed that way.

I watched a video on youtube by styropyro and his green laser altoid box with my eldest son. We ordered the green module from the information link included.

I want a powerful 520nm laser. I don't want one that cannot reach the cloud cover. So what is my best option? I have yet to see a viable way to get a good infinity beam from one of the 1 watt 520nm diodes.

Superglue trick

So, I was watching stuff on YouTube testing things like what epoxy and duct tape are the best with some really great scientific ways to tell and happened to come across something I've never heard of. Using regular old superglue in a different cool way.
All you do is apply superglue to whatever you want and then sprinkle it with baking soda which happens to be a great catalyst and in about 5 seconds it turns rock hard actually getting quite warm in the process because it cures so fast. You can keep adding more superglue and more baking soda to build it up and fill gaps and its really awesome. It becomes something like cement and people say it is 5x stronger.
I tried it out on a phone charging cord that had one wire broken. I soldered it back together and didn't cover the ground wire or it with any kind of electrical insulation and just spread the wires apart enough so they wouldn't touch and then proceeded to do the superglue thing and it worked perfect.
Regressing with it yourself and see what things you can come up with to use it for.
I have a LOT of different glues/epoxy and this is kind of a game changer for some applications not to mention how cheep you can buy superglue and baking soda!
Hope this little tip helps a lot of you guys out:-)

Help in buying appropriate lasers

Hi, all,

I'm not a laser enthusiast as many of you are but I'm interested in using them for a project. I am a (real) scientist attempting to conduct a vision study with animals and want to use lasers as a sort of vision-only obstacle course. We're using 532 nm because we know that is in the range of what these animals can see (blue/violet is a possibility; red is out). For this to work, the beam needs to be visible in the dark. I've just tested out a 50 mW laser and the beam is weak and barely visible even to me. Is the solution to increase power? I am concerned about the safety of eyes and skin for the animals, so am worried about lasers strong enough to light matches and pop balloons. Does anyone have any suggestions for increasing beam perceptibility? I've considered smoke/fog, but there is a lot of sensitive equipment in the room that might suffer damage.

Wow!
If only I knew back then what I know now!
I also forgot that I never once posted in the Welcome section. I believe me and BobMc had a rather funny discussion about this about a year or so ago, I may end up posting a 3 year past due welcome from myself :)

Where to get best shrink wrap

I am prolly NOT the 1st one to 'find' this guy BUT--no mention found in search and he sez he only started selling shrink tube about a year ago...
here is the dealieo
he offers (from USA) like 300 choices of shrink--and in 7 colors with a few more coming.
If you are like me you have gotten the assortment packs (like Harbor Frieght) and soon ran out of the smaller sizes--

at the shrinkwrapbuddy you can get only what you want. and any length-- (by default tho it comes free$hipped in 9 inch pieces--you can ask for longer pieces if you want)
I wont need a lot of the 'other' colors as mostly I will use very small pieces to mark the neg wire with a color coded piece over the black shrink.. example-projector TTL wires (6) come from a RGB driver BUT they are all red and black--so a small piece of green or blue is added and forever marked.

I will add pics when my order arrives.. Buddy might allow us a small discount too... SO if you order do mention LPF and me. ;)

If you do not see exactly what you need Buddy can make a custom order with your needs.
;; he may later carry other supplies like silicon wire etc.
Located in Pompano Beach FL.

atm colors--red -black-yellow-white- blue- green-clear-
coming soon
orange-brown-grey- purple- (405):D

Let Buddy know about an other supplies we need.. I mentioned solder and flux..

Hello. I'm Justin, and I just joined the forum today. Have been fascinated with laser technology since I was a kid in high school. I remember how thrilled I was when I purchased one of these cool new "high-powered" <5mw 650nm pens. Had no idea what the future held in store over the 20+ years that followed. I've had a few 50-500mW 532s, and built a 100mW 405 not long after those diodes came on the market. I lost interest maybe about 7 or 8 years ago and now find myself laserless, having sold or given them all away over the years.
Recently though, I've had my sights set on one of these Sanwu 465/470nm 4W heldhelds. I hear it's a good quality overall laser and host. I'm fond of the spiker saber host design for whatever reason. Question; Does anyone know what approximate beam divergence you might get with a G7 lens and Sanwu expander used together?
Gonna to try my best to hold back this wicked temptation for now, but I just know I'm eventually going to probably end up caving. :takeit:

Laser repair options help needed SHINP

$

So a club friend gave me their old SHINP DL-33 dual green laser. Since one of the green's went out, they gave it to me for free.

I'm new to this new obsession so I'm trying to figure out options. The left green diode isn't as bright. When I jiggle the power plug to the circuit board, it gets a little bright, but not much more. Voltmeter says power is going there so it must be a bad green diode.

What replacements should I be looking for? The rest of the unit works fine and the other green laser is bright as heck. Any links to what I should replace this diode would be greatly appreciated. I looked at the links above, Amazon and Ebay and there are just too many options with TTL driver module, I can't tell which to get. I'm assuming I can just pull it out of the heatsink that its screwed into and replace the center portion. Or get a whole new module in another color and align and screw it down.

That's the first unit.

I made the impulse buy of another SHINP DL-55c knock-off with FOUR color lasers for $125. Of course, those idiots didn't double box the laser and it came with the green laser mount broken. Once again, I have a non-working laser!! They refuse to take back the return (claiming shipping back to China is too expensive and the NEW Jersey address is just a warehouse) but are offering me $50 off and to try to repair it. Its in Ebay dispute right now, but then I found this forum and must consider other options.

The laser and heatsink was mounted sideways on a plastic mount. The plastic mount broke, so I'll have to replace the mount. While fiddling with it, the wires came off the rear of the laser so now I have to re-solder. What options do I have now? They used a 60mw Green.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/RGBP-460mW-...53.m1438.l2649

Any help, or referral to a DC Metro area repairperson would be greatly appreciated. After reading this forum, it doesn't look difficult to replace the diode and re-align, I just don't have the knowledge to know which diode to get.

Thanks!

Hey there guys. One of my very first builds was this Dorcy Jr .

I made two interchangeable drop in modules for it, one is a phr and the other is a lpc.

Today I noticed that it wont turn on anymore. Tested the switch and it has no continuity. Its dead.

I love this little host and I really want to resurrect it. How do I replace the switch? It seems to be crimped in place?

Thank for any help you can offer.

I'm looking for a 22A 4V driver. (2 26650s as power source)

A small driver with the ability to use an external adjustable pot (as blackbuck M8) would be great.

Any designs for such a driver would also be useful.

Custom 2W laser idea

Hey guys. I'm thinking of building a laser that uses three laser diodes: 650nm, 532nm, and 405nm diodes. My goal is to get this laser to have an output power of at least 2W. I am curious to hear what you all think of this idea. Also, what would this look like, considering that i am replacing the typical blue color to make a white laser with a violet color? What color would this output? Thanks.
